Chapter 6 Flashcards
Aquatic organisms have to deal with 2 things
- water availability
2. salinity
Water available it is affected by 2 things
- Water gain
2. Water loss
2 things that effect water gain and water loss are:
- Temperature and humidity
2. Evaoparation
Concentration gradients
Influence the movement of water between and organism and the environment
Increased water vapor in air( humidity) leads to
Decreased evaporation rates
Decreased water vapor int he air(humidity) leads to
Increased evaporation rates
Possible methods terrestrial animals use to obtain water
- Drinking
- Metabolic water
- root systems
- absorbtion through skin
Metabolic water
The water an organism produces internally by metabolizing food
Possible methods terrestrial organisms use to conserve water
- waxy cuticles
- exoskelotons
- vaculos
- Closing stomata
Root systems in dry soils compared to moist soils
Dry: extensive, need t be able to tap into the water table which is lower
Moist: shallow, Water able is high so they don’t need ot be as long
2 main mechanisms terrestrial organisms get rid of water
- Urination/excretion
2. Evaporation
Other mechanisms for how terrestrial organisms get rid of water:
- crying
- breathing
- sweating
- transpiration
- active transport through cell membranes
Oquatic organisms have to deal with balancing
Salinity
Osmosis
The process by which after travels along a concentration gradient in order to regulate homeosastis
Isosmotic
-organisms w/ body fluids containing the same concentration of water and solutes as the external environment
