Chapter 5: Acids and Bases Flashcards
1
Q
What are acids?
A
pH < 7
Compounds/ions that donate protons
2
Q
What are bases?
A
pH > 7
Compounds/ions that accept protons
3
Q
What is Svante Arrhenius’ definition of an acid?
A
Substance that, when added to water, increases concentration of hydrogen ions (H+)
4
Q
Why are hydrogen ions (H+) often referred to as a proton?
A
H+ analogous to a proton, because atom structure of hydrogen cation is such that it has lost its one and only electron and is thus left with just a nucleus containing 1 proton
