Q

What is the difference between “preguntar” and “pedir”?

A

Preguntar is “to ask” in the form of a question, where one is requesting information.

Pedir is “to ask for,” regarding something. It does not use a preposition as it does in English: “Arnaldo pide permiso para salir.”

Question v. Request is an easy rule of thumb.
