Chapter 3 Flashcards
A theory is
a set of generalized statements about political, social or economic activity
A theory is intended to be used as as
a basis for prediction
What are hypotheses?
general statements positing many possible relationships between two or more variables.
When thinking theoretically about international relations, using levels of analysis help us to (4 things)
- make logical decisions
- Explore all categories of explanation
- ask appropriate questions
- Decide what evidence to consider
What are the levels of analysis
- individual level
- state level
- international level
What is the focus of the individual level of analysis?
Personality, perceptions, choices and activities of individual decision makers
What is the focus of the state level of analysis?
characteristics of the state, such as the type of government or economic system or interest groups.
What is the focus of the international level of analysis?
characteristics of the international system or its’ organization.
What is realism based on
based on a view of the individual as primarily fearful, selfish, and power seeking.
Define Realism
individuals are organized into states, which act to pursue their own national interest, defined in terms of power.
What is liberalism based on?
Human nature is basically good and people can cooperate to affect social progress
Liberals advocate what 4 things?
- individual freedom
- free trade
- collective action
- international institutions
What is not advocated by liberals? (1 thing)
Aristocratic Governments
Neoliberal institutionalists argue that international actors
they cooperate with each other not because they are innately good, but because it is in the self interest of each to cooperate
According to realist Hans Morgenthau International politis
is a struggle for power that can be explained at all 3 levels of analysis.
