- The deliberate imitation of an earlier style within a contemporary context.
- The idea of writing in a deliberately old-fashioned style, or in a manner openly influenced by a much earlier style
- Pointed rejection of modernist developments.

What are some characteristics of neoclassicism?
A
- A return to the tonal idiom, often chromatically inflected
- a return to conventional genres and forms (Baroque and classical eras)
- suite, sonata, concerto, concerto gross, ritornello principle, sonata form, rondo, and theme and variations.
- a return to the ideal of absolute music (music not connected with a text or program of any kind.)
- a generally tendancy toward transparent textures, lighter orchestration, and smaller ensembles in general.
- Conciseness of expressionism, avoiding grandiose or bombastic gestures.
