Chapter 21: Blood Vessels Flashcards
5 main types of blood vessels
Arteries. Arterioles. Capillaries. Venules. Veins.
Basic structure of a blood vessel
Tunica intima
Tunica media
Tunica externa.
Tunica intima
Consists of inner endothelium, basement membrane, and internal elastic membrane
Tunica media
Consists of smooth muscle and connective tissue
Tunica externa
Adventitia. Consists of collagen and elastic fibres. Contains vasa vasorum and nerves.
Elastic arteries
Largest arteries. Contain elastic lamellae. Function as a pressure reservoir.
Muscular arteries
Tunica media contains more smooth muscle. Also called distributing arteries. Maintains vascular tone.
Arterioles
Regulate blood flow into capillaries. Known as resistance vessels. Fenestrated tunica intima.
Metarteriole
Terminal end of arteriole that tapers towards capillary junction
Capillary
Smallest blood vessel that allows for gas and nutrient exchange. Can be:
Fenestrated
Continuous
Sinusoid.
Based on permeability
Aortic divisions
Ascending aorta
Aortic arch
Thoracic aorta
Abdominal aorta
Ascending aorta branches
Right and left coronary arteries
Aortic arch branches
Brachiocephalic (to R common carotid and R subclavian)
Left common carotid
Left subclavian
Thoracic aorta branches
Pericardial
Bronchial
Esophageal
Mediastinal
Posterior intercostal
Subcostal
Superior phrenic
Abdominal aorta branches
Inferior phrenic
Lumbar

Gonadal
Inferior mesenteric
Common iliac.
