Chapter 2 Vocabulary Flashcards
Energy
The ability to do work. Energy comes from inexhaustible, renewable, and exhaustible sources, and it allows technological systems to operate.
Closed Loop System
A control system that uses feedback and is a built-in part if the device
Feedback
The process of giving back data on how well a system is operating. This process provides information so adjustments can be made to improve the system’s outputs. In the design process, feedback is the use of information from a later step to improve an earlier step.
Feedback Systems
A control system
Goal
A reason or purpose for a system
Input
A resource a system uses to meet the identified goal
Intended Output
The reason for which a system was designed. These outputs are produced in response to human needs and wants.
Knowledge
Specific information known about various subjects.
Machine
A device, or mechanism, that changes the amount, speed, or direction of a force. A machine is also a framework to which mechanisms or tools can be attached to make work more efficient.
Material
A substance from useful products or items are made.
Natural System
Everything that appears in nature without human interference.
Open-loop system
A feedback system that has external controls and requires human intervention
Output
The result of any system
Pollution
An output harming the environment
Process
The actions taken to put resources to use. A process includes the steps taken to produce products and services.
