Chapter 2 Flashcards
What are the three types of demands needed in human functioning?
Perceptual, Motor and central control
What is Perceptual?
Being able to detect information coming from sensory media
What is Motor?
Being able to take (multiple) actions
What is Central control?
Being able to coordinate thoughts and actions to achieve goals
What are some limitations on the parallelist nature of our brain?
A matter of number, too few neurons
A matter of communication, further apart, the longer the communication time
What do we need in order to keep track of the goal and coordination to succeed?
Brain fibers have to connect multiple cortical regions.
What connects multiple cortical regions using brain fibers?
Basal ganglia
What regions does the basal ganglia interconnect?
the cerebral cortex, the thalamus, and the brainstem
What are three key features of the basal ganglia?
- Allowing information from different regions of the brain converge in making a decision
- Requiring great compression of information because there is a limited number of receiving neurons
