Q

What happens when a cell undergoes apoptosis?

Q

The machinery of apoptosis involves which proteins?

A

Caspases

Note: these belong to family of proteases the members of which are made as inactive precursors called as “procaspases”

Q

What family of Bc12 protein promote procaspase activation and cell death?

A

bax & bak
Note: these proteins activate procaspase indirectly by inducing the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria
- This cytochrome C promotes assembly of a large seven armed pinwheel like structure called as “apoptosome”
- Procaspase molecule become activated into apoptosome triggering a caspase cascade leading to death of cell
