Chapter 18- The Cell Division Cycle (Apoptosis Part) Flashcards
The swelling of cell as a result of acute injury is called
Necrosis
What happens when a cell undergoes apoptosis?
- the cytoskeleton collapses
- nuclear envelope disassembles
- nuclear DNA breaks up into fragments
The machinery of apoptosis involves which proteins?
Caspases
Note: these belong to family of proteases the members of which are made as inactive precursors called as “procaspases”
What proteins are responsible for activation of procaspases ?
Proteins of Bc12 family
What family of Bc12 protein promote procaspase activation and cell death?
bax & bak
Note: these proteins activate procaspase indirectly by inducing the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria
- This cytochrome C promotes assembly of a large seven armed pinwheel like structure called as “apoptosome”
- Procaspase molecule become activated into apoptosome triggering a caspase cascade leading to death of cell
Programmed cell death?
Apoptosis
