chapter 13: transcription Flashcards
1
Q
what was seen as the original genetic material and biological catalust
A
RNA
2
Q
what are some similarities between dna and rna
A
- both have a nitrogenous base, phosphate group, sugar and are joined by phosphodiester bond
3
Q
what are some differences between dna and rna
A
- rna = ribose sugars, dna = deoxyribose sugars
- rna = single polynucleotide dna = double polynucleotid
- rna = free oh group on the 2’ carbon, dna lacks one
- rna = uracil, dna = thymine
rna can fold to form a secondary structure and dna folds to make a double helix - dna is more stable than rna because it doesnt have the free OH group
4
Q
in what cells is rRNA found(13.1)
A
prokaryotic and eukaryotic
5
Q
where in the cell is rRNA found (13.1)
A
cytoplasm
6
Q
what is the function of rRNA (13.1)
A
structural and functional components of the ribosome

pro and euk
8
Q
where in the cell is mRNA foun
A
cytoplasm+ nucleus
9

what does mRNA do
A
carries genetic code for proteins
10
