Chapter 13 Flashcards
What are scatterplots used for
a method to assess the relationship between 2 interval-ratio variables
Which is the independent and dependent variable for a scatterplot
X-independent (horizontal)
Y-dependent (vertical)
How is the existence and strength of the relationship shown on a scatterplot
the closer the dots are together and to the line, the stronger the relationship
3 ways drawing a line helps with a scatterplot
1.) the closer the dots to the line the stronger the relationship
2.) the angle of the line (slope up= positive, slope down= negative)
3.) pattern of the dots, if they are close in proximity to each other
What is the line drawn on a scatterplot called
regression line
What does slope mean with the variables being time males contribute and number of kids
If slope is 0.5 with every kid they have the male will contribute 0.5 more hours of chores
What is Y’ for
used to predict a value by putting a number in for X
Pearson’s r
a measure of association for two interval-ratio variables
little r squared
how much does out knowledge of X increase our ability to predict Y
What is a dummy variable
a nominal or ordinal variable used in a regression analysis with 2 categories numbered as 0 and 1
Null hypothesis for pearsons R
there is no linear association
