Chapter 12 - Protein Synthesis Flashcards
Protein synthesis is a complex process made up of 2 processes. What are they?
Transcription and translation.
What is Transcription, and what does it do?
During transcription messenger RNA (mRNA) reads and copies DNA’s nucleotide sequence in the form of a complimentary RNA strand. Then the mRNA carries the DNA’s information in the form of codons to the ribosome. At the ribosome, amino acids will be assembled to form a polypeptide, which will become a protein
What is a codon?
3 nucleotide sequence in an mRNA strand
What are the 4 nitrogenous bases and what are their pairs?
Guanine - Cytosine
Adenine - Thymine
What is Translation, and what does it do?
The production of a protein using the information coded in the mRNA molecule; protein synthesis.
