Chapter 11 - The Circulatory System Flashcards
Coronary blood vessels
Blood vessels that circulate to and from the muscle cells of the heart
Purpose of the chordae tendineae
Support AV valves; prevent valves from opening backwards under high pressure
pericardium
Two layered fluid filled membrane that surrounds the heart and protects it from friction against other tissues and organs
3 basic components of the circulatory system
- Circulatory fluid
- Tubes
- Pump
systolic vs. diastolic pressure
systolic - pressure in artery when heart contracts
diastolic - pressure when heart is relaxed
Difference between the arteries and veins in the pulmonary circuit vs. the systemic circuit
Pulmonary circuit - arteries carry deoxygenated blood, veins oxygenated
Systemic - arteries carry oxygenated blood, veins deoxygenated
The right side of the heart pumps blood to the ___ circuit, while the left side of the heart pumps blood to the ___ circuit.
Right - pulmonary
Left - systemic
What nerve fibres are located in the septum?
Purkinje fibres (which carry signals from AV node to muscle cells of ventricles)
How does air pressure effect breathing?
Lower air pressure makes breathing more difficult, since air moves from area of high to low pressure
