Chapter 10 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
What captures light energy?
Chlorophyll in Thylakoids
Where does Photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplast (leaves)
Photosynthesis equation?
CO2 + 12 H2O + Light Energy –> C6H12O6 + 6 O2 + 6 H2O
Or
CO2 + 6 H2O + Light Energy -> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
Where do light reactions take place?
Thylakoids
Where does the Calvin Cycle take place?
Stroma
What is produced in light reactions?
O2, sends NADPH and ATP from light energy to Calvin cycle
What is produced in the Calvin Cycle?
Sugar (CH2O), sends NADP+ and ADP + P to Light reaction side
Why is the Calvin cycle called dark reactions or light independent?
Requires no light directly
How do plants produce O2?
The H2O splits the oxygen in the product side of the reaction
Similarities with ATP Production
NADP+ similar to NAD+ and the chemiosmosis by powering the addition of a phosphate group to ADP called photophosphorylation
Wavelengths chlorophyll a and b are best at?
Violet-blue and red
Difference between action and absorption spectra
Absorption shows individual pigment data while action involves all of it together making it more accurate
What wavelengths does carotenoids reflect and absorb?
Reflect: yellow and orange
Absorb: violet and blue-green
What wavelengths does chlorophyll a absorb and reflect?
Absorb: violet-blue
Reflect: blue-green
What wavelengths does chlorophyll b absorb and reflect?
Absorb: blue
Reflect: olive green
