CHAPTER 10 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Define the process of photosynthesis
Process of converting solar energy into chemical energy
What is the difference between Autotroph and Heterotrophs?
- Autotrophs produce organic molecules, using organic molecules
- Heterotrophs obtain organic materials from other organisms. They depend of photoautotrophs for food.
Where does energy enter plants and gets stored as chemical energy?
Chloroplasts
Where is excess sugar stored in plants?
Starch
Where does the green color of plants come from?
Chlorophyll.
Where is the major location for photosynthesis in plants?
Leaves.
Where are the chloroplasts found in the cells?
Mesophylls, interior tissue of the leaf
What are the names of the pores that CO2 enters and O2 exits the leaf?
Stomata
TRUE OR FALSE: Thylakoids are stacked in columns of grana.
TRUE.
what is the dense fluid found in the chloroplast?
Stroma
Whats the equation for photosynthesis?
6 CO2 + 12 H2O + Light energy → C6H12O6 + 6 O2 + 6 H2O
What are the reactants and products of photosynthesis?
REACTANTS - 6 CO2 and 12 H2O
PRODUCTS - C6H12O6, 6H2O, 6O2
What are the 2 stages of photosynthesis?
Light reaction and Calvin Cycle.
Describe what happens in the the light reaction cycle.
H2O is split and releases O2, the reduction of NADP+ into NADPH/ ATP is generated from ADP by photophosphorylation.
Describe what happens in the Calvin Cycle.
Sugar is produced from CO2 using ATP and NADPH.
