Chapter 1 Vocabulary Flashcards
Radius
A line segment with endpoints as the center of the circle and any point on the circle
Diameter
A chord that intersects the center of a circle
Solution point
A point on the graph of a function or relation; an ordered pair that when plugged into an equation will make a true statement
Center of a circle
A point inside a circle to which all points lying on the circle are equidistant
Distance formula
A formula that is derived from the Pythagorean Theorem that allows you to find the distance between any two coordinate pairs.
d = √(x2-x1)^2 + (y2-y1)^2
Parallel lines
Lines that have equal slopes
Perpendicular lines
Lines that have slopes that are opposite reciprocals of one another. These lines form a right angle at the intersection point.
Linear equation
y = mx + b
Average rate of change
The average slope over an interval of inputs of a function
Increasing
The value of f(x) is increasing as we move from left to right
Decreasing
The value of f(x) is declining as we move from left to right
Constant
The value of f(x) is not changing as we move from left to right
Absolute maxima
At x0 if f(x0) is the largest value of f(x) on I
Absolute minima
At x0 if f(x0) is the smallest value of f(x) on I
Zero of a function
The x values for which f(x) = 0; the roots of a function; the x-intercepts
