What is a Fracture?
Open or compound when the bone has broken the skin.
What is a Closed fracture?
Has no break in the skin and can only be accurately diagnosed by an X-ray.
What does the MA should do if the patient has a suspected fracture (1)?
Immobilize the area with a splint or sling (the fracture part should not be moved).
If the fracture is open what does the MA should do (2)?
Apply direct pressure with a sterile bandage around any exposed bones to stop the bleeding.
In an open fracture the MA should cover the wound with sterile dressing (2)?
Yes.
In a open fracture there should be made to force any protruding bone back into place (2)?
No, immobilize the area with a split or sling.
What does the MA should monitor the patient (3)?
Because the trauma of a major injury can cause a patient to go into shock.
What does the MA should do (4)?
Apply ice packs for comfort and management of swelling until EMS arrives of the patient is released to orthopedics.
