What happened in 1517 to begin this movement?

A

In 1517 A German monk named Martin Luther began to criticise the church. He posted a list of complaints on the door of his church in Wittenberg,Germany. This act is regarded as the beginning of the Reformation. Eventually lead to the establishment of Protestant churches. Martin Luther a German monk, priest and university professor posted a list of his complaints (95 of them) against the church after witnessing people paying indulgences.

A

He believed that people did not need popes or other officials to tell them what God wanted them to do.

Luther felt that ordinary people could read the Bible for themselves. He translated the Bible into German so that ordinary people could read it. He was in favour of creating town schools that would teach everyone to read

Luther despised the church practice of selling indulgences or pardons for sins. At that time people asked to pay money to the church to be forgiven for their sins. Luther felt the church didn’t have the power to exchange gods forgiveness for money. The church often sold indulgences more to raise money than for any religious reason

Why did many support Luther’s ideas?

A

In Germany priests, nobles and ordinary people rallied behind Luther’s ideas. Some priests agreed with Luther about corruption in the church. Nobles were eager to limit the church’s overwhelming power.they wanted to collect their own taxes and make their own laws, like the leaders of Italian city states. War and plague had also shaken peoples faith in the church. An opportunity to save money they were forced to spend on the church and regain land given to the church.

What invention help spread Luther ideas across Europe?

A

A revolution in technology had begun in Germany in the 1400s, German print and Johann Gutenberg invented the first European printing press using movable type. He printed a Bible in 1455. The development of the European printing press helped spread Luther’s writings across Europe. Bibles printed in German became available. By the time Luther died in 1546, most people in now day northern Germany well Lutheran.

First Bible Called Gutenberg Bible after the inventor, Johann Gutenberg.

Regarded as the most important event of the modern age as it played a key role in the development of the Renaissance, Reformation, The age of Enlightenment and the scientific revolution.

What does Protestant mean? Was this Luther’s original plan for the church?

A

These were called Protestant churches because they grew out of protests against the power and abuses of the Roman Catholic Church. This was not looses original plan for the church. Luther’s aim was to reform the Catholic church not divide it.

Many Catholics agreed with some of the criticism of the church; however, instead of leaving what did they do?

A

Many Roman Catholics agreed with some criticisms made by Protestants. Instead of turning away from the church, however,they worked to reform it. As part of this catholic reformation, Pope Paul III set up The Council of Trent in 1545. For almost 20 years, it worked to correct the worst abuses of the church. But it also maintained the basic teachings of the Catholic Church.

How did the church retaliate to this reformation?

A

To wipe out heresy, the church strengthened the power of the Inquisition.

This separation in the church led to wars and persecution across Europe. The effort to reform the church led to the rebirth of sincere faith among Catholics.

A

Inquisition-a system of church courts that used secret testimony and torture to root out heresy and force non-Catholics to convert to Catholicism. Also known as the Counter-Reformation.
