What are Burns?
Trauma to the skin or underlying tissue caused by heat, radiation, electricity or chemicals.
First-degree burns are superficial burn that only involve?
The epidermis.
Second-degree burns are partial-thickness burn that involve?
Epidermis and Dermis.
Third-degree burns are full-thickness burn that involve?
The dermis and underlying layer of fat.
What is the treatment for First-Degree burn?
Submerge burned skin in cool water until the pain subsides.
First-Degree burn is covered with?
A steril, non-adhesive bandage.
How does the patient may treat the First-Degree?
At home with OTC burn gel.
What is the treatment for Second-Degree burn?
Run cool water over the burn for up to 30min and cover with a sterile, non-adhesive bandage.
How does the patient may treat the Second-Degree?
At home with OTC pain medication and burn gel for small second-degree burns.
A patient with Second-Degree burns that cover a large area should be?
Monitored for shock while awaiting transfer to the hospital.
What does the patient always require with Third-Degree burns?
Hospitalization for IV fluids, debridement to remove dead skin, pain medication and skin grafts.
