Chapter 1: Basics of Behavior Flashcards
exam 1 material
what is histology?
the study of microscopic structures and tissues that provides the means for observing structure, organization, and connections of individual cells
what do PET scans visualize?
PET scans show patterns of brain activation but not information about structure, a radioactive chemical is injected into the blood to measure glucose metabolism in the brain
how do MRIs work?
MRIs use magnets to align hydrogen ions in the body and a radio pulse makes those ions spin, when the pulse stops and the hydrogen ions ”relax” they emit a radio frequency we can detect
what do fMRIs visualize?
fMRIs track cerebral blood flow, when more blood is in a brain area then that area is more active
what does DTI visualize?
tracks the flow of water in white matter fiber pathways of the brain
