Categorical Variable
places an individual into one of several groups/categories
Numerical Variable/ Quantitative Variable
takes numerical values for which arithmetic operations like adding and averaging make sense
Response
a variable that measures an outcome or result of a study
Observational Study
observes individuals and measures variables but does not intervene or influence
What is the purpose of an Observational Study?
To describe some group or situation
Population
in a statistical study, it is the entire group of individuals about which the information is wanted
Sample
the part of the population from which we actually collect information and use to draw conclusions about the population
Census
sample survey that attempts to include entire population
Experiment
deliberately impose some treatment on individuals in order to observe the response
What is the purpose of an Experiment?
to study whether the treatment changes the individual’s response
