Chapter 1 Flashcards
Undefined slope is for what line
Vertical
Zero slope is for what line
Horizontal
What is general linear equation
Ax+by=c
What does the vertical line test test?
If it is a function or not
Even function is…
Symmetrical over an axis
Odd function is…
Symmetrical over origin
How do you know algebraically if it is an even function
F(-x)=f(x)
How do you know if something is algebraically odd?
F(-x)=-f(x)
What are domain restrictions
- vertical asymptotes
- holes
- even powers of radicals
What do you do to find domain when function has square root sign over it
Can have zero but not negative so put the equation next to > or = to 0. Might need to do line to figure out which numbers work.
How do you find domain of cubic root function?
The equation “is not equal to” 0
What does x^3 look like in graph
Symmetrical over origin
What does y=1/x look like
Symmetrical over origin. Never touching 0 on both x and y axis because of asymptotes. Asymptotes can change.
Does natural log look like ln
Yes.
Natural log looks like…
It is on the 1st and 4th quadrant and makes a curve bowed out from the bottom right corner
Sine equation starts at top or middle
Middle
Does cosine graph start at top or middle
Top (or bottom)
What is the equation for exponential growth?
Y= k* a^x
What does exponential growth looks like and decay
This is the line rising slowly up and up…decay is the graph going down. Growth graph is bowed out from top left corner and decay graph is bowed out from top right corner.
What is popular equation
P=p1 (1+r)^t
What is population decline
P=p1(1-r)^t
What is compound continuously
P=p1* e^rt
What is equation for compound interest
P=p1 (1+(r/n)^nt
N=how many times per year
T= time
What is half life
Y=y1((1/2)^t/h)
H=half life
What does the horizontal line test test
If it is a one to one equation
How do you find inverse
Just switch x and y
How do you know if it is an exponential decay or growth
A> 1 is growth
0<a></a>
What is slope intercept form
Y=mx+b
How do you find amplitude when given a graph?
Subtract min from Max and divide all by 2 to find amplitude
To find y or node what do you do when given a graph
Add Max and min and divide by 2
