Appellate courts
The second tier of the court system. Also known as the court of appeals
Administrative agencies
Federal agencies that are grouped in the federal system
Bill
A proposed law to be approved of by the legislative or executive branch
Case law
Also known as common law which is created by the courts through the appeals process
Certiorari
The ability of a court to decide which case it will hear
Circuits
The name for the federal trial courts
Original jurisdiction
When a court has the power to hear a case
Pocket veto
When the president does not sign a bill there fore vetoing it
Criminal law
Between private parties and society prosecutor works for society charges defendant with criminal counts found guilty or not guilty
Civil law
Between private parties. only plaintiff versus defendant. Have pleadings known as theories or causes of action. found liable or not liable
Statutory law
Passed by legislature called statues or codes
Guilty
In criminal law
There is sufficient evidence, using the beyond a reasonable doubt standard, to convict.
Does not mean innocent
