Political Ideology
consistent set of beliefs and attitudes about the scope and purpose of government
Four Kinds:
Libertarians- individualism
populists- equality and social order
conservatives- individualism and social order
liberals- equality and individualism
Texan Creed
Consists of a set of ideas that identigy Texans and provide basis for their politics and government
Libertarians
Highly individualist extension of classical liberalism, emphasize very strong the autonomy of the individual and minimal role of government
Liberals
Favors government that uses authority to promote equality, but that leaves an individual free to make moral or personal decisions
Populists
Favor government intervention both to promote equality and to establish or maintain an ordered liberty, support greatest scope of government action
Conservatives
Government should not promote equality, but support regulation of individual behavior in order to ensure an ordered liberty
Traditionalistic
Government is expected to preserve social order and relative position of the various social classes, participation by lower classes usually discouraged by law
Moralistic
Government is necessary to promote public good, government should regulate society to protect economically weak (children, elderly, poor).
Citizen has responsibility to participate in society by being informed on issues and voting
Individualistic
Government should be limited only to essential functions
Individuals should be free to pursue their own interests to the best of their abilities
Political Culture
attitudes, habits, and general behavior patterns people have in relation to their government
Liberty
Belief that government should not infringe upon a person’s individual rights
Texas revolt from Mexico, Battle for the Alamo
Equality
Belief that all individuals should be treated similarly regardless of socioeconomic status
Constitutionialism
Limits place on government through written government
Anglos
Non hispanic whites
1815-1836 - predominantly upper Southerners from Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, North Carolina
Dominate politics and goverment
Tejanos
Native texans of Mexican descent
TX independence result of alliance between Anglos and Tejanos
