Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is smooth muscle tissue?
- involuntary tissue
- found in walls of blood vessels + most internal organs
what is cardiac muscle tissue?
- involuntary tissue found only in the heart
- controls itself with fine-tuning from nervous and endocrine system
what is skeletal muscle tissue ?
- voluntary tissue that moves the skeleton to produce movement for exercise
Define muscle tissue
cells specialzed for contracting which creates tension, producing movement
what is a sarcomere?
basic functional unit of a myofibril
What is the sarcolemma?
composed of the plasmalemma + basment membrane
What is a tendon ?
fibrous chords of connective tissue, that transmit the force generated by muscle fibres to the bones, creating motion. muscles attached to bone via tendon
plasmalemma (cell membrane)
- Fuses with tendon
- Conducts action potential from the motor neuron to the muscle fiber
- Maintains pH, transports nutrients into the muscle fibers
What are satelite cells?
- between the plasmalemma and the basement membrane
- Muscle growth and development and in adaption to injury, immobilisation and training
What is the sarcoplasm?
A gelatin-like substance which fills the spaces within and inbetween the myofibrils, Contains many dissolved proteins, minerals, glycogen, fats and organelles and has high quantity of stored myoglobin
T-tubules
- Extensions of plasmalemma
- Carry action potentials and other substances deep into muscle fiber; and waste products out of the cell
Sarcoplasmic reticulum
-Longitudinal network of tubules
- storage for calcium (essential for muscle contractions)
