Chapter 1 Flashcards
A number’s distance from zero on a number line.
absolute value
A mathematical sentence containing one or more variables.
Open sentence
The graph of a compound inequality containing “or”.
union
The graph of a compound inequality containing “and”.
Intersection
Any number , m/n, where m & n are integers. The decimal form is either a terminating or repeating decimal.
rational number
A replacement for the variable in an open sentence that results in a true sentence.
solution
All numbers used in everyday life; the set of all rational and irrational numbers.
real numbers
A mathematical sentence that expresses the relationship between certain quantities.
formula
Symbols, usually letters, used to represent unknown quantities.
variables
An expression that contains at least one variable.
algebraic expression
A mathematical sentence stating that two mathematical expressions are equal.
equation
Two inequalities joined by the word “and” or the word “or”.
compound inequality
The expression of the solution set of an inequality, for example {x/x>9}.
setbuilder notation
A real number that is not rational. The decimal form neither terminates nor repeats.
irrational number
The solution set for an equation that has no solution, symbolized by { } or an “O” with a slash through it.
