Chap 6 terminology Flashcards
KEY TERMINOLOGY
Chlorophyll
light absorbing green pigment that begins photosynthesis
Chloroplast
membrane bound organelle in green plant and agal cells that carries out photosynthesis
Stroma
2 membranes of chloraplasts; inner membrane and outer membrane encolsed in the stroma
Thylakoid
membrane bound sacks inside the stroma
Grana
colums of stacked thylakoids
Lamelle
groups of unstacked thylakoids between grana
Thylakoid membrane
photosynthetic membrane containing light gathering pigments molecules and electron transport chains
Thylakoid lumen
fluid filled space inside a thylakoid
Glucose
end product of photosynthesis
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
molecule containing 3 high energy phosphate bonds that acts as the primary energy transferring molecule in living organisms
ADP
molecule containing 2 high energy phosphate bonds that may be formed by breaking one of the phosphate bonds in ATP
NADP+
accepts one H+ atom and two electrons then converted into NADPH; and electron acceptor
NADPH
donates one H+ atome and two electrons then converted into NADP+ I an electron donor
Light dependant reaction
first step of reactions in photosynthesis ( stage 1&2). Light energy excites electrons in chlorophyll molecules, power chemiosmotic ATP synthesis and results in th reduction of NADP+ to NADPH
Light Independant reaction
last set of reactions ( stage 3) in photosynthesis ( the Calving cycle) these reactions do not require solar energy
