enclosure
the state of being enclosed, especially in a religious community.
proletarianization
the social process whereby people move from being either an employer, unemployed or self-employed, to being employed as wage labor by an employer
cottage industrialism
a business or manufacturing activity carried on in a person’s home.
putting-out system
merchant-employers “put out” materials to rural producers who usually worked in their homes but sometimes laboured in workshops or in turn put out work to others.
industrious revolution
the transition to new manufacturing processes
guild system
a medieval association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power.
economic liberalism
A belief in free trade and competition based on Adam Smith’s argument that the invisible hand of free competition would benefit all individuals, rich and poor

a series of laws that restricted the use of foreign ships for trade between Britain and its colonies

The treaty that ended the 7 years war
debt peonage
A form of serfdom that allowed a planter or rancher to keep his slaves or workers in perpetual bondage
Atlantic slave trade
The forced migration of Africans across the Atlantic for slave labor and in other industries; the trade reached it’s peak in the eighteenth century and ultimately involved more then 12 million Africans
