CH8 Biological Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
Cholesterol and the cell membrane
at high and low temperatures how is the fluidity?
A
Low Temperature: Increase the fluidity of the membrane by preventing the formation of crystal structures
High temperatures: Becomes harder and helps hold the membrane intact
2
Q
Cell-Cell Junctions:
- Gap Junctions
- Tight Junctions
- Desmosomes
A
Gap Junctions: direct cell-cell communication formed of connexin they allow for water and solutes to move b/w
Tight Junctions: Prevent solutes from leaking into the space b/w cells via a paracellular route. Found in the linning of renal tubules
Desmosomes: Anchor adjacent cells to their cytoskeletons, by interaction b/w intermediate filaments inside the cells
