Ch.4- Tissues Flashcards
Is epithelial tissue vascular or avascular?
Avascular, has lots of nerve endings though
Types of connective tissue
Proper, fluid, and supporting
Are connective tissues vascular or avascular?
Avascular
What is simple vs stratified epithelial tissue?
Single is one layer and stratified is 2+
What are the cell-cell junctions?
Gap, adhesion, tight, and desmosome
What is the cell-matrix junction?
Hemidesmosome
Describe tight junctions
Impermeable, like a net between 2 cells,
Describe adherens junctions
Like Velcro to prevent separation, encircle the cell, attach on inside of each cell to an adhesion belt
What are actin filaments?
Support and strengthen plasma membrane
What’s an adhesion belt?
Bundle of actin filaments just below membrane
Describe desmosome junctions
Bind cytoskeletons, inside cell, distributes tension
Describe Hemidesmosomes
Anchor cell sheet to underlying connective tissue
Describe gap junctions
Connects cytoplasms, has a channel
Types of covering/lining epithelia
Epithelium, endothelium, and mesothelium
Describe epithelium
Type of covering/lining epithelia, covers body surface, lines lumens of digestive tract, respiratory tract, and urogenital tract
Describe endothelium
Lines ❤️ chambers and lumen of blood and lymph vessels
describe mesothelium
Covers serous membrane
Types of epithelial membranes
Mucous, serous, cutaneous, and synovial
Describe mucous membrane
Lines body cavities that open to exterior
Describe serous membrane
Pericardium, pleura of lungs, peritoneum
What’s cutaneous membrane?
Skin
Describe synovial membrane
Surround joint cavities, produce synovial fluid
Epithelia by cell shapes:
Squamous, cuboidal, columnar
What are goblet cells?
Only Produce mucous, exocrine gland, found in upper respiratory system and stomach
How do you classify epithelia with more than one layer?
Name it by the apical cell shape
Describe glandular epithelia
Produce a secretion
Classifications of glandular epithelia
Endocrine and exocrine
Describe exocrine glands
Secretes too body surface or into body cavity, from inside cell to outside, has duct attached to secretory unit
Describe endocrine glands
Secreting into interstitial fluid into blood stream, doesn’t have duct
What are cytogenetic glands?
Secrete whole cells, only germline cells
Modes of secretion
Merocrine, apocrine, halocrine
Describe merocrine secretion
Exocytosis
Describe apocrine secretion
Pinched off portion of cell is secreted
Describe halocrine secretion
Mature cell dies and becomes secreted product
Types of connective tissue proper
Loose and dense
Types of supporting connective tissue
Cartilage and bone
Types of loose connective tissue proper
Areolar, adipose, and reticular
Types of dense connective tissue proper
Regular, irregular, elastic
Types of cartilage
Hyaline, fibro, and elastic
Types of bone
Compact and spongy
Types of epithelial tissue
Glandular, covering and lining
