Ch2 Flashcards
The crust
Outside layer
Made of soil and rocks
Oceans and continents on top of the crust
The mangle
Under the crust
Made of molten rock called magma
Magma is moved around by current
The core
Centre of the earth
Ad eod iron and nickle
6,000 degrees Celsius
Inner amd outer core
Layers the Earth is made up of
Crust
Mantle
Core
What is the earths crust broken into
Plates
What are continental plates
Plate swith land on top
What are oceanic plates
Plates with oceans on top
What is a plate boundary
The line where 2 plates meat
What is magma in the mantle moved by
Convection currents
Convection currents explained
- When magma is heated it rises towards the crust
- As it rises it cools moving sideways, causing friction between the crust and pulls the plates
- The magma cools and sinks back down into the mantle
- Constantly repeated
What is plate tectonics
The study of plates and their movement
What happens at plate boundaries : collide
Destructive boundries
Subduction (heavy plate under lighter plate)
Heavy plate melts into matle light plate lifts up to form fold mountains
Earthquakes and volcanoes
Ex the Andes
What happens at plate boundaries : separate
Constructive boundaries
Magma rises to fill gap between plates, forming new crust( called sea-floor spreading)
Forms volcanic mountains and island and mid-ocean ridges
Ex iceland
What happens at plate boundaries : sliding plates
Passive boundaries
Plares are locked together and realse a huge amount of energy when they slide past each other
Cause earthquakes and fault lines
Ex San Andreas Fault
