Q

Convection currents explained

A
  1. When magma is heated it rises towards the crust
  2. As it rises it cools moving sideways, causing friction between the crust and pulls the plates
  3. The magma cools and sinks back down into the mantle
  4. Constantly repeated

Q

What happens at plate boundaries : collide

A

Destructive boundries
Subduction (heavy plate under lighter plate)
Heavy plate melts into matle light plate lifts up to form fold mountains
Earthquakes and volcanoes
Ex the Andes

Q

What happens at plate boundaries : separate

A

Constructive boundaries
Magma rises to fill gap between plates, forming new crust( called sea-floor spreading)
Forms volcanic mountains and island and mid-ocean ridges
Ex iceland

Q

What happens at plate boundaries : sliding plates

A

Passive boundaries
Plares are locked together and realse a huge amount of energy when they slide past each other
Cause earthquakes and fault lines
Ex San Andreas Fault
