What is the purpose of diagnostic surgery?
To make an accurate diagnosis
Involves removal + study of tissue.
What is an example of diagnostic surgery?
Skin lesion biopsy / removal of a lump in breast tissue.
What types of masses can be biopsied?
Benign OR malignant - biopsy of abdominal mass / thoracic mass / OR brain mass.
What is the purpose of ablative surgery?
Removes OR destroys abnormal/diseased tissue.
What is an example of ablative surgery?
A small tumor.
What is cardiac ablation?
Destroys abnormal tissue causing dysrhythmias (e.g., atrial fibrillation).
What are some types of ablative surgery?
Endometrial, Urethral, Bladder, Brain.
What is cholecystectomy?
Gallbladder surgical removal.
What is appendectomy?
Surgical removal of the appendix.
What is the purpose of palliative surgery?
Relieves symptoms OR improves function without correcting the underlying problem.
When is palliative surgery performed?
On an incurable cancer, to reduce pain symptoms and increase quality of life.
What is exploratory surgery?
Usually requires opening a body cavity to diagnose + determine the extent of a disease process.
What is an example of exploratory surgery?
Exploratory laparotomy - abdomen opened to find the cause of unexplained pain.
What is reconstructive surgery?
Restores function OR structure to damaged OR malfunctioning tissue.
What are some treatments in reconstructive surgery?
Correct arthritic joints + hernias, Breast reconstruction from mastectomy, Total knee replacement.
What is the purpose of procurement for transplant surgery?
Remove organ from living OR deceased person for transplant to another.
What is constructive surgery?
Restores lost function due to congenital defects.
What is an example of constructive surgery?
Cleft palate.
What is the purpose of cosmetic surgery?
Improves person’s perception of their appearance.
What are some treatments in cosmetic surgery?
Change shape of facial features, Remove wrinkles, Flatten abdomen, Change size OR shape of breasts.
