Ch 7: Muscles & Joints Flashcards
Electromyography (EMG)
measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle
3 types of muscles
skeletal
smooth
cardiac
arthralgia
pain in the joints
ataxia
without muscular coordination
atrophy
wasting away
literally ‘without development’
autonomic nervous system
regulates involuntary vital function, including activity
of the cardiac, smooth muscle & glands
bradykinesia
abnormally slow movement
characteristics of:
cardiac muscle
(two)
- striated
- specialized muscle that forms the wall of the heart
characteristics of:
skeletal muscle
(three)
- striated muscle
- voluntary muscle
- mainly work in pairs; contraction & relaxation
characteristics of:
smooth muscle
(three)
- visceral
- involuntary
- regulated by hormones & the autonomic nervous system.
contracture
an abnormal–often permanent–bending of a joint into a fixed position;
usually caused by atrophy and shortening of muscle fibers
dors/o
back
dyskinesia
condition in which there is impaired movement;
‘bad’ or ‘difficult’ movement
epicondylitis
painful inflammation of tissues surrounding the elbow;
also known as ‘tennis elbow’
fascia
(three)
- connective tissue
- a thin casing that surrounds and hold every organ, blood vessel, nerve fiber, and muscle in place
- has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin
fibromyalgia
a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain throughout much of the body, muscle spsams, fatigue, and muscle stiffness
