Ch. 7: Metabolism Flashcards
Metabolism
The sum of all the chemical and physical changes that occur in body tissues when food is converted from large molecules to small molecules
Anabolism
The process of making new molecules from smaller ones
Where does glycolysis occur?
Cytosol (cytoplasm)
Condensation
An anabolic process by which smaller, chemically simple compounds are joined with the removal of water
Hydrolysis
Breaking apart a molecule by the addition of water
Phosphorylation
The addition of one or more phosphate groups to a chemical compound
-Catabolic
Glucose + ATP ==> Glucose Phosphate + ADP
Oxidation-reduction reaction
Reactions in which electrons are lost by one compound and simultaneously gained by another compound
Metabolic Pathways
Chemical reactions that occur sequentially and achieve a particular goal
e.g. glucose for energy
Redox reaction important to metabolism
Going back and forth between FAD and FADH
Coenzymes
A molecule that combines with an enzyme to activate it and help it do its job
- Most are b-vitamins
Cofactors
A chemically simple substance that is required for enzyme activity
-typically minerals
Glucokinase
An enzyme that adds a phosphate group to a molecule of glucose
