Ch 5- Skeletal System Flashcards
Bones are made up of what kind of tissue?
Osseous tissue
Bones consist of what kind of connective tissues?
Cartilages, ligaments, and other (for skeletal stabilization)
What are the functions of the skeleton?
Support, protection, movement, blood cell production, mineral storage/homeostasis
Bones are made up of what?
Supporting connective tissue, specialized cells, solid matrix
Periosteum is what?
The outer bone lining
Endosteum is what?
The inner bone lining
What is the function of the periosteum?
Lines outside of bone, protects bone, attaches to fascia, and attachment site for circulatory and nervous supply
What is the function of the endosteum?
Lines medullary cavity and is one cell thick
The matrix of the bone consists of what?
Calcium phosphate and collagen fibers
Calcium phosphate eventually converts to what?
Hydroxyapatite crystals
Function of osteoblasts:
Build bones
Function of osteoclasts:
Break away bones
Function of osteocytes:
Keep tissues alive by giving nutrients
Coordinated removal and replacement of bone tissue by osteoclasts and osteoblasts is what?
Bone remodeling
When is bone remodeling necessary?
To change bone shape/adapt to environment, replace old/damaged bone, and release mineral stores
What are the two types of bone?
Compact (cortical) bone and spongy bone (cancellous/trabecular)
Compact bone is made up of what?
Osteons - the basic functional unit of bone
Spongy bone consists of what?
Branching plates called trabeculae, form a network, is why bones are light weight
Ends of the long bones are what?
Epiphysis
Shaft of the long bones
Diaphysis
Widened portion of diaphysis where bone is added during growth
Metaphysis
The line separating the diaphysis and epiphysis, consists of cartilage until skeletally mature
Epiphyseal plate
The replacement of cartilage cells into bone
Ossification
Bone formation is?
Osteogenesis
The deposition of calcium ions into the bone tissue
Calcification
Involved in the development of clavicle, mandible, skull, and face
Intramembraneous ossification
Involved in the development of limbs, vertebrae, and hips
Endochondral ossification
Steps 1-4 of endochondral ossification involve what?
The initiation of ossification in the developing bone
Steps 5-7 of endochondral ossification involve what?
Increasing the length of the developing bone
What are the different types of bone?
Flat bones, irregular bones, long bones, short bones, sesamoid bones
