Surface-burning characteristic
Speed at which flame will spread over the surface of a material
Intumescent coating
Fire retardant coating that expands when exposed to the heat of a fire, creating an insulating barrier that protects the material underneath
Mastics
Heat resistant construction adhesive that can be used as fire retardant coating
Flame spread rating
Measurement of propagation of flame on the surface of materials as determined by a standardized test
0 = lowest
>200 not allowed in occupancies

Rated assemblies
Various building components that are fire rated and used in combination to provide areas of refuge
Fire flow

Fire wall may not be needed if sprinkler system in place
Enclosure/shaft/stairwell walls
1 or 2 hours of fire rating depending on height of building
> 4 stories = 2 hours
Curtain walls
Non load bearing walls suspended by internal framing
Fire door ratings
20 minutes to 4 hours
3-4 hours for two hour fire wall
1-2 hours for two hour vertical enclosure
Fusible links used to activate some types of fire doors
Rolling overhead or sliding
