Ch 31: Asthma Flashcards
Common environmental factors that cause asthma symptoms
vary from person to person and include outdoor allergens such as pollen and molds, indoor allergens like dust, dander and molds, smoke and occupational environments, cold weather
What meds can precipitate exacerbation of asthma?
Aspirin and other nonsteroidal NSAID can precipitate exacerbation.
What are clinical manifestations of asthma? (4)
dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness, cough and sputum productions
Acute or severe asthma- does not respond to ???
bronchodilators and is characterized by severe respiratory distress called status asthmaticus. This is life threatening requiring emergency help.
2 generic names for Albuterol?
Proventil, Ventolin
Prevents asthma attacks but not acute asthma attacks.
What is albuterol used for?
to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with asthma or reversible obstructive airway disease
When do you give epinephrine (Adrenaline)?
If you hear inspiratory stridor
When do you NOT give epinephrine (Adrenaline)?
If the patient has V-TAC
What drugs are Most useful in the long-term management of asthma and other conditions producing bronchoconstriction (chronic bronchitis, emphysema)
Anticholinergics
What are two drugs in anticholinergics class?
Two drugs in class: Ipratropium and tiotropium (Spiriva)-
What drug is ordered for treatment of many inflammatory conditions. Long term
Suppresses airway inflammation, produces beneficial effects including decreased mucus secretion, decreased edema of airway mucosa, and repair of damage epithelium
Corticosteroids
What is a negative side effect of corticosterioids?
May stop someone from producing own cortisol
What are Leukotriences?
are fatty compounds produced by immune system after trauma, infection and inflammation
What do Leukotriences do?
hey can cause sustained construction of bronchioles and immediate hypersensitivity, increase mucus secretion and mucosal edema in respiratory tract
What Leukotrience Modifier is effective in those with asthma and do not respond to other therapies?
Montelukast (singular)-
