Ch 3 Vocab Flashcards
Facilitated diffusion
Needs to pass through membrane in transport protein. Polar or large molecules.
Active transport
Movement of molecule through membrane requires transport protein and energy. Moves substance against concentration gradient ( moves less to more)
Osmosis
Movement of water down its concentration gradient (lower to higher concentration)
Hypotonic
Higher solute concentration inside cell, water moves inside
Hypertonic
Higher solute concentration outside cell, water moves out of cell
Isotonic
Concentration of solute outside and inside cell equal, no net change in water inside vs outside
Endocytosis
Cells eating and drinking (forms vesicles)
Exocytosis
Cells removing waste and secretions
Simple diffusion
Direct passage through plasma membrane with no assistance from molecule. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, small with no charge.
Selectively permeable
Allows only certain materials to pass through
