Describe cirrostratus clouds
Thin and sheet-like in appearance. Form above 20,000ft that often indicate arrival of precipitation within 24hrs if secondary to an approaching warm front.
Describe cirrocumulus clouds
Look like cotton balls. Form above 18,000ft and generally indicate fair weather
Describe altostratus clouds
light blue to mid grey cloud that covers whole sky. Form between 6,500-23,000ft and typically indicate an impending storm with heavy precipitation
Describe altocumulus clouds
Look like cotton balls but darker and larger than cirrocumulus clouds. Form between 6000-20,000ft and typically indicate afternoon thunderstorms
Describe nimbostratus clouds
Dark grey clouds that cover the sky and block out the sun. Form below 6,500 feet and typically indicate light to moderate precipitation.
Describe cumulonimbus clouds
Large towering clouds with a shape like an anvil. Indicate thunderstorms
Describe stratocumulus clouds
look like large cotton balls in regular lines and patches. Form below 6,500ft and indicate wind but little precipitation
