CH 19 Heart Part 3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is stroke volume (SV)?
A
How much blood the heart is pumping out
2
Q
What is venous return?
A
Amount of blood returned to heart
3
Q
Person 1: HR = 70 BPM SV = 50 mL Person 2 : HR = 90 BPM SV = 70 mL Who has a greater venous return? Why?
A
Person 2, because they have a higher SV so more blood is leaving so more blood must be returned
4
Q
Person 1: HR = 70 BPM SV = 50 mL Person 2 : HR = 90 BPM SV = 70 mL Who has a longer ventricular return time? Why?
A
person 1, because they have a lower HR so the heart is beating slower giving the ventricles more time to fill up
5
Q
What three things affect stroke volume?
A
- Pre-load
- Contractility
- Heart rate
6
Q
What is pre-load?
A
The more the ventricles stretch the higher the SV will be
7
Q
Which side of the heart plumps more blood?
A
They BOTH pump the same amount of blood (Ventricular balance)
