Agricultural society, lacking manufacturing plants, no good transport (RR), no navy, ill-equipped to fight war
What are some northern advantages?
Large population, excellent transportation system, manufacturing facilities, more food, a large navy, Lincoln
What were some northern disadvantages?
No real cause to fight for, weren’t going to attack in south (but did), poor generals

2) seize control of Mississippi River and split confederacy in two
