Cephalosporins Flashcards

1
Q

List two medications in the first generation, and two medical conditions that first generation best treats and why?

A

FIRST GENERATION:
*Cefazolin and cephalexin
SKIN INFECTIONS (Due to great gram positive coverage)
SIMPLE UTI’s (Due to so-so gram negative coverage, but good gram negative coverage such as E,Coli)

Q

List two medications in the second generation cephalosporins and what they best treat and why?

A

SECOND GENERATION:
*Cefuroxine and Cefotetan
Best treat INTRA-ABDOMINAL INFECTIONS (Due to second generation cephalosporins having anaerobic coverage.

Q

List three medications in the third generation of cephalosporins and what they best treat and why?

A

THIRD GENERATION:
*Ceftriazone/most commonly used for community acquired pneumonia.
*Ceftazidime treats pseudomonas. (Pseudomonas is a particular bacteria often acquired in the nursing home in particular in their lung)
*Ceftaxime is also included in third generation.
THIRD GENERATION best treats lung infections or community acquired pneumonia as it best treats the gram positive bacteria Pneumococcus.
THIRD GENERATIONS also has one of the best gram negative coverage’s out of all the generations of cephalosporins

Q

Name a fourth generation cephalosporin and what its best to treat and why?

Q

List two fifth generation cephalosporins. what are they? a what are they made up of? what do they best treat?

A

FIFTH GENERATION:
Ceftolozane/Tazobactam
Ceftolozane is an anti-pseudomonal and tazobactam is a beta lactamase inhibitor. This medication with these in combination makes a potent anti-pseudomonal medication.

Ceftaroline is another fifth generation and treats MRSA
