A
- well tolerated/associated with fewer allergic rxn compared to PCN
- Time dependent killing
- Most are renally excreted
- not active against enterococci

What are 4 facts about first gen: cefazolin(IV) and cephalexin (oral)?
A
- gram + (staph and strep)
- Gram - against E. coli, proteus spp, klebsiella
- MSSA
- good for cellulitis and surgical prophylaxis

A
- active against gram + S. pneumoniae)
- Active against H. influ
- Lose some gram + activity but gaining gram - activity
- Good for respiratory infections and UTI

A
- less activity against S. aureus than 1st gen, but excellent activity against streptococci
- no activity against pseudomonas
- Good against P. pneumoniae, H influ, and other respiraotry bacteria
- Can be used against N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae.
- Good CSF penetration for meningitis

A
- Active aginst gram + but not MRSA or S. epidermidis
- Active against gram - including pseudomonas aeruginosa
- no anaerobic activity
- good empuric abx when worried about potential hospital acquired infection
- report some neurotoxicity in patients with renal failure

A
- active against MRSA and S. pneumonia (affinity got PBP2a)
- Active against gram - but not active against P. aueruginosa and anaerobes
- Active against oral anaerobes
- Approved for pneumonia and skin/soft tissue infections but not blood stream infections
