-US reaches agreement with NK’s and Chinese - Eisenhower kept pledge
- America tries to move on from another war
Eisenhower:
- Eisenhower keeps campaign pledge to end conflict
- He wanted domestic life as a priority
- He was going to take care of Americans personally
- Wanted to lower the retoric and crisis in the US
- Wanted to focus on Americans future
- Wanted to turn back the clock to the America of his childhood
- Not everyone wanted to go along with his sociatial changes
American Society:
-White males had the last word/women put down
- Bussinesses of America = Bussiness
- Economic boom transforms the country
- Wages were going up, US becomes a consumerism society
- Most people took up white collar jobs
Sociaital Changes:
- It was not a good time for women in the workplace
- There were no female managers
- The womens’ place was in the home
- It was a couples society
- The thing was to be maried
- People lived in suburbias, but good things happened
- Children were being born at a very fast rate
TV and Advertising:
Playboy——>
- A new TV was something everyone wanted
- They became affordable for the average consumer
- There was a greater need for programming
- Most aired live, with lie mistakes, but people loved it
- radio was virtually abandoned
- It became an integral part of your life
- With TV came advertising
- Playboy began to say that sex was okay, or that it was good
Teenagers! Rock and Roll!
- People were scared of the music being played by Loyd Price, Little Richard, and others
- The music had a name, Rock and Roll
- It was an infectious kind of music
- They were scared of how good black people were
- First star- Elvis was adored
- He was the soundtrack for a new era
Beat Movement:
- Thrived in New York’s Grenwhich Village
- Did not know why people were identifying so much with appliences when they have their own identities
- Used language as their weapon, challenged the conformity of the 50’s
The Automobile:
- Car was the dominant symbol of US life
- Had an impact on American life
-Cars viewed like emblems of an individual personality - Every 7th job was related to the Automobile industry
- Federal Highway system built, country connected city by city
- Also wanted the military to be able to move around aswell
Hungarian Revolution
-People lived under the darkening shadow of the cold war
- US and USSR both had massive arsenals at their disposal
- Hungary rebbbealed aaginst the Russian occupation in 1956
- US wanted to liberate Hungary, they were in bad shape, and they had promised them, but didn’t budge
- Kids were broadcasting “SOS” and “The Tanks are here!”
- 10,000 Hungarians died at the altar of superpower competition
Atomic Age:
- Soviets take 4 yrs to develop Atomic bomb, they take 8 months to develop H bomb
- Bombs were insanely tested on US’s
- They were also in a race with their rockets, vital to nuclear
- The rockets were really bad, exploded a lot
- Oct 4 1957, the soviets were able to launch 1stt Staalite, Spuntik
- People in the US were terrified of a surprise attack
- Disscussed the relative points of Communism and Capitalism in “The Kitchen Debate”
- They thougt Soviet kids were doing way better in school, when American kids were wasting their lives away
