Central Nervous System Drug Flashcards
Central Nervous System Drug
- Produce profound activity in the brain and
spinal cord. - Most CNS drugs correct an imbalance in neurotransmitters or their receptors.
- Useful for treating anxiety, sleep disorders, relief pain, and suppresion of seizures.
CNS Stimulants
- Include a diverse family of drugs known for their
ability to increase the activity of the CNS. - Including amphetamines, methylphenidate, cocaine, and caffeine—increase the activity of the CNS and produce increased wakefulness.
- Used to treat ADHD and Narcolepsy
Dopaminergic drugs
Increasing dopamine concentrations or enhancing neurotransmitter functioning.
Anticholinergic Agents
Inhibit cerebral motor centers.
Phenytoin
- Anti-epileptic drug. Works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures
- Preferentially binds to activated state sodium channels
Phenobarbital
- Slows the activity of your brain and nervous system.
- Used to treat or prevent seizures.
Parkinson’s disease
- A neurological disorder of CNS or lost of dopamine neurons.
- It can treat by either increasing dopamine or decreasing acetylcholine.
Clonazepam
- Enhancing the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.
- Used to treat certain seizure disorders.
Neuromuscular Blocking Drugs
It is muscle relaxants that are only used during surgery to prevent muscle movement.
Bemegride
Stimulates the medullar respiratory center (central effect)
Cordiamine
- Decreases the aortic and coronary flow
- Useful in the treatment of:
Hypotension, Coronary insufficiency, Respiratory insufficiency
Synaptic Transmission
Allows information to be communicated between two nerves or from nerves to muscles or glands.
Benzodiazepines
Preferred drugs for various anxiety disorders and for insomnia
Neurotransmitter
Chemicals that transmit signal signals from a neuron to target cell.
Neuropharamacology
Focuses on drugs that have an effect on the nervous system.
