Cells and Energy Flashcards
what is the function of ATP?
A molecule that transfers energy from the breakdown of food molecules to the cell’s process
What is a monohybrid cross?
crosses that examine only one specific trait that is inherited.
What is a punnett square?
A grid system that is used to predict the possible genotypes and phenotypes resulting from a cross
What is a phenotypic ratio?
The likelihood of each possible phenotype to result in an offspring as a result of a cross
What does heterozygous mean?
describes two alleles that are different at a specific locus (point)
What does homozygous mean?
describes two alleles that are the same at a specific locus (point)
What is the law of segregation?
1) Organisms inherit two copies of each gene one from each parent
2) Organisms donate only one copy of each gene in their gametes (two copies of each genes segregate or separate during gamete formation)
When are recessive alleles expressed?
When two recessive alleles are expressed together with a dominate allele
What is the law of independent assortment?
states that allele pairs separate independently of each other during gametes formation or meiosis (different traits appear to be inherited separatly)
What is a dihybrid cross?
crosses that examine the inheritance of two different traits.
