Cells Flashcards
what is hydrophilic?
hydrophilic is attracted to water.
what is hydrophobic?
hydrophobic resists water.
what is the cell membrane model referred to?
the fluid mosaic
how do you know if the cell is isotonic solution?
there will be no flow of water in or out of the cell and the cells volume will remain stable.
which part of the cell membrane is hydrophilic and which part of the cell membrane is hydrophobic
the outside of the cell membrane is hydrophilic and the inside proteins are hydrophobic.a portions of an integral membrane inside(protein) are hydrophobic. those parts that are exposed to the cytoplasm or outside fluid tend to be hydrophilic
hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic

How do you know if the cell is in a Hypertonic solution?
There will be a net flow of water out of the cells and the cell will lose its volume.
How do you know if the cells volume is hypotonic solution?
There will be a net flow of water into the cell and the cell will gain volume?
What is thefunction ofa Phospholipid?
It acts as a barrier to the passage of molecules and Ions into and out of the cell.
what is the function of a polerhead?
polar heads contact the fluids inside and outside of the cell. because of its chemical old and acts as a semi-permable membrane.
what is the function of a nonpolar tail?
to make the membrane semi-permeable.
What is the purpose of a carbo hydrate chain?
The function is to recognize harmful cells.
What is the function of the Glycoprotein?
Glycoproteins are molecules that comprise of protein and Carbohydrate chain that are involved in many physiological functions including immunity.
What is the purpose of external membrane surface
Is to keep all the unwanted substances out of the cell and is also used to be a gate allowing transport into the cell of essential nutrients.
What is the purpose of a Phospholipid layer?
Phospholipid bilayers create a selectively permeable barrier to the movement of ions and molecules important for celluar function.
