Cells Flashcards
Organelle?
Small structure inside an organ eg: nucleus
What kind of shape do plant cells have?
A regular shape
What are chloroplasts and where are they found?
They contain green chlorophyll and are the site of photosynthesis, they are found in parts of plants/algae that photosynthesise
What does a vacuole do?
It gives a plant cell shape as it is packed with sap.
What do ribosomes do?
They produce protein
What do mitochondria do?
They are the site of aerobic respiration and release energy for the cell
What does a cell membrane do?
It controls substances moving in and out of the cell
What is cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is a liquid gel in which organelles are suspended. Most chemical reactions needed for life take place here.
What does the nucleus do?
It controls all activities of the cell, it’s surrounded by the nuclear membrane. It contains genes that carry instructions for making the proteins needed to build new cells or organisms
Where is the cell wall and what is it?
It is found in plants and algae, it’s made of cellulose and it strengthens/supports the cell.
Are animal cells prokaryotes or eukaryotes? (And spell both terms)
They are eukaryotes
The spelling of the terms is prokaryotes/eukaryotes
