Cells Flashcards
Any substance recognized by the body as a foreign, or “not self”
Antigen
Substance synthesized by the immune system that can recognize specific foreign materials in the body and initiate a specific immune response against it.
Antibody
Floor of the cranial cavity, which includes portions of the temporal and occipital bones, as well as the sphenoid and ethmoid bones
Basilar skull
States that at a constant temperature, the volume of a gas varies inversely with its pressure
Boyle’s law
Fluid secreted from special cells in the ventricles of the brain that serves to cushion the brain and spinal cord, as well as provide a carefully regulated chemical environment around them
Cerebrospinal fluid
Sensory cells that respond to chemical changes in the body fluids, such as the level of carbon dioxide or O2, and send this information to the CNS to initiate changes that maintain or restore homeostasis
Chemoreceptors
One of the four basic tissue types in the body (in addition to muscle, epithelium, and nervous tissue)
Connective tissue
Pertaining to the skin
Cutaneous
Epithelial tissue that lines the inner surface of a structure
Endothelium
Layers of cells that cover or line a structure, allowing for protection, absorption, secretion, and other specialized functions
Epithelial tissue
All fluid in the body that is not within cells
Extracellular fluid
Large opening at the base of the skull that allows the brain stem to be continuous with the spinal cord
Foramen magnum
Iron-containing protein molecule in red blood cells to which O2 can bind reversibly
Hemoglobin
Measure of pressure as determined by the amount of pressure needed to raise a column of mercury 1mm
Millimeters of mercury (mmHg)
Partial pressure of a gas in the proportion of the total pressure of a mixture of gases that can be accounted for by an individual gas.
Partial pressure
