Cell Structure Flashcards
Cell membrane
A lipid bilayer that surrounds the cell, providing protection and controlling the movement of substances in and out of the cell
Nucleus
The control centre of the cell, containing genetic material (DNA) that directs all cellular activities, including growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
Cytoplasm
A gel like substance within the cell membrane, which houses the the organelles and is the site of most cellular processes.
Organelles
Specialized structures that with the cell that that perform specific functions such as: mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, ribosomes, and cytoskeleton.
Mitochondria
“Power house of the cell” generated ATP (adenosine triphosphate) through cellular respiration providing energy for cellular activities.
Endoplasmic reticulum
The rough ER is involved in protein synthesis while the smooth er is is involved In lipid synthesis and detoxification.
Golgi apparatus
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for secretion or delivery to other organelles.
Lysosomes
Contains digestive enzymes that break down waste materials and cellular debris
Ribosomes
The site of protein synthesis where amino acids are assembled into proteins according to genetic instructions.
Cytoskeleton
A network of protein filaments and tubules that provides structural support, helps maintain cell shape, and facilitates movement
